Skull in a knitted hat with crossed crochet hooks

Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo

A skull wears a blue knitted bobble hat with a red band and pom-pom, with a black eyepatch over one eye and lashes on the other. Two crossed crochet hooks sit behind the skull, a red shaded halo surrounds it, and a black banner below reads HOOKED. Bold black outlines and smooth shading give it a neo-traditional look, with the colour and grey shading set against pale skin.

Mind the fire, and somebody fetch the lamp before the draught takes it. Snow had sealed the Drover's Rest for three days when the bell above the door gave one tired ring, and in shuffled a skull wearing a bobble hat knitted in blue wool, with a red band and a pom-pom the size of a turnip. A black eyepatch was strapped over the left socket and a fringe of lashes sat over the right, which Edith the landlady said was the vainest thing she had ever seen on a dead man.

He laid two bone-handled crochet hooks on the bar like a pair of crossed swords and announced that he had come for the wool stolen from his shop in Hebden Bridge. The hooks were worn smooth by a hundred thousand loops. Nobody in the room had heard of a crochet pirate, but the skull had a way of looking at a man that made him check his pockets for his purse.

Edith had a ball of grey yarn in her apron that she had meant to finish since Michaelmas. She set it on the table. The skull leaned in, the lashes trembling, and said the thief was no thief at all but a woman who pulled her stitches too tight. Then he hooked the ball with one cold finger, drew a single loop, and by the time the fire burned low a scarf had grown from the wool and wound itself twice around the legs of every chair.

When the thaw came the scarf was gone, and so was the skull, but Edith found a strip of fresh red stitching pinned to the inn door with one word worked across it. Nobody ever asked her what it meant, and nobody who has been caught on a bad hook needs it explained.
