Pirate owl with cutlass and skull hat

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A cartoon owl in a pirate costume, with a black tricorn hat decorated with a skull and crossbones, a black eye patch, a pink and purple coat and a hook hand holding a silver cutlass. The bold black outlines and soft shading give the figure a playful, illustrative look, and the teal feathers, rainbow iris and orange beak and talons stand out against the pale skin. The design is centred on the limb with plenty of clear space around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had buried the lane to the top of the gatepost by Tuesday, and the Drover's Rest had nothing left to serve but mutton and argument. Nell Parry found the owl at dawn, perched on the cellar hatch with a tricorn hat tipped over one eye and a bread knife tucked through his belt. He had teal feathers, a rainbow stare that could have stopped a clock, and the bearing of a man who had lost a great many arguments with the sea. "Fetch me the rum, lass," he said. "Captain Gosling Thrale does not drink cocoa."

Nell did not fetch the rum. She fetched the innkeeper's old eye patch from the hook behind the bar, because the owl had tied his own with a length of spotted handkerchief and it had slipped to his beak. He accepted it with dignity and moved on to the guests. The fiddler agreed to play a shanty if the owl would stop calling him a bilge rat. The tax inspector refused to be counted as crew until the owl produced a warrant, which the owl produced from inside his coat, sodden and folded into a paper hat.

By evening the whole room was singing about a sea that was, as far as anyone could tell, the field behind the stables. Nell watched the snow pile against the windows and understood, slowly, that the owl had been stranded too, cast off from some better voyage and blown into a cellar with nothing but a knife and his pride. She set a mug of cocoa on the bar and slid it across to him.

"Land ho," she said.

The captain drank, dabbed his beak with the handkerchief, and gave her the slowest wink she had ever seen.
