Skull in feathered headdress on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A skull in profile wears a large feathered headdress, with the feathers drawn as layered outlines that sweep back from the head. The design is rendered in bold black linework with little or no shading, and the skin behind it is plain. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame on the forearm, with a hand and a ring visible at the right edge.

Set the basket down before the rooks see it. They have been following you since the mill gate, and they will want the feathers you have pulled from the dead bird for your mother's hat. Your father said the skull under the hazel belonged to a miller's boy who drowned in the leat, and that the crown of rook feathers someone wired to it was the miller's own idea of a joke. You do not believe him. Nobody jokes that carefully.

The feathers sweep back from the bone in layers, each one drawn so neatly you could count them against the light. Someone spent a whole winter on them, long after the boy was in the ground. You crouch and lift the crest by its brow, and the wire gives like wet thread. A rook lands on the lowest branch and tilts its head at you, the way the parish clerk does when a child reads the psalm wrong.
Out past the stile the bell starts, slow, for somebody's grandmother. You know the sound and you know the path, and you know you should go home. Instead you fit the crown back onto the skull, feather by feather, and you set it facing the village with its jaw open, as if it has something to add to the sermon.
When you come back at dusk the feathers are gone, and so are the rooks. Only the skull remains, grinning up the lane at the church, and a single black plume caught on the stile where you put your hand to climb.
