Ornate feather and birds on forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large black feather runs diagonally along the forearm, filled with mandala-like patterns, dotted detail and curling swirls. Two small birds in flight sit beneath the feather's tip. The work uses solid black ink and fine linework against pale skin and a dark background, with a clean, centred composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The first storm of the autumn had torn the lantern's glass loose, and I was still picking shards from the gallery rail when the birds came down out of the murk. Two of them, small and dark, settled on the railing as though they had been sent for. Mrs Hollis from the mainland would have called them a sign. I called them a nuisance and went back to my scraping.

Along the stairwell wall, my father had pinned a feather from the first bird he ever logged on this rock, a long grey primary he kept in a biscuit tin for forty years. He used to say a feather tells you which way the wind has been. That night I took it down and found the quill split near the tip, the vane curled into loops like the ironwork on a churchyard gate, every barb standing apart from its neighbour.

In the morning the birds were gone, but the lamp had been lit by someone else. I had slept through the change of watch. Tom Ruddock from the lifeboat had climbed the stairs with a cup of tea and found me asleep against the lens housing, the tin open on my knee, and he had not woken me. The light had turned all night on its own clockwork, and the boats coming in read it true.

I pressed the feather flat inside the logbook, between the page for the gale and the page for the calm. Out on the water two dark shapes skimmed the swell, heading west, and I wrote them down as birds, which is all they were, and all I needed them to be.
