Skull tarot card and hand on forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a skull inside a rectangular card with the words LA MORT across the top, above a hand with fingers pinched together near the skull's jaw. A decorative dotwork ornament sits at the bottom of the design. The linework and stippled shading are fine and detailed, in black ink and grey tones, and the design fills the upper forearm against a blurred background.

Marta had been told the cards would never lie, only the people who read them. In the ruined keep above Hallow Dene, the wind came through the arrow slits and turned the pages of her grandmother's ledger, and every autumn she laid the old deck out on the flagstones where the chapel floor had once been. She never touched the card with the skull. That was the rule.

On the ninth evening of October a stranger climbed the spiral stair with a lantern in one hand and a pinch of grey ash held between finger and thumb. He asked for La Mort. Marta told him the card was not for sale. He laughed, not unkindly, and said he had come to settle a debt owed to the card, not to her. Then he lifted his hand beside the skull's painted jaw, as though plucking something small from the air, and tucked the ash into a crack in the wall where the mortar had crumbled away.
She waited for the house to fall in on them. Instead the wind dropped, and the skull on the card seemed to ease its grin by a fraction, the way a man does when a bill has been paid. The stranger nodded to her, lifted his lantern, and went back down the stair without a sound on the stone.
At dawn Marta found frost on the narrow window in a pattern of fine dots, rings within rings, like the ornament her grandmother had sketched in the back of the ledger. Beneath it, in a hand she did not recognise, someone had written one word: Paid.
