Skull with dollar eyes and circular lettering
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A simple black outline drawing of a skull with dollar signs in place of its eyes and a row of teeth along the jaw. The words EYES ONLY FOR YOU are arranged in a circle around the skull, with small x marks either side. The linework is uniform and thin on a plain white background, with no shading or colour.

The watch was still warm from the man's pocket, which told Maggie more than his story had. She turned it over under the lamp, read the engraving inside the case, and wrote a figure on the ticket before he could ask for one. Forty pounds. He wanted sixty. Everyone wanted sixty, and everyone took forty in the end.

Her father had kept the shop on Chapel Street for thirty years, and his rule was pinned inside the till drawer on a card gone soft at the corners: never let a man see you count. Maggie counted anyway, under her breath, because it unsettled people and made them agree faster. Behind the counter sat a biscuit tin of pledges that never got redeemed. Each one had a folded slip tucked beneath it in her father's neat capitals, usually just a date and a name.
The last slip she read that autumn said EYES ONLY FOR YOU, and nothing else. Underneath, in biro, he had drawn a skull with two coins where its eyes should be and a row of teeth grinning along the jaw. She had laughed the first time she found it and hadn't laughed the second. Now she understood it was a joke he had been saving for her, and that the tin was the only thing he had left to leave her.
The watch man came back at closing with his jaw set. She slid the forty across the counter and kept her hands flat on the wood. "Sixty's a fair price for a watch that runs," she said. "This one's a lie, love." He took the notes and went. Maggie opened the tin, found the blank slip she had been keeping, and wrote her own name on it in capitals.
