Skull with Goonies Never Say Die banners
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A skull sits at the centre of the design, with two banners reading GOONIES and NEVER SAY DIE running diagonally across it and a ship's wheel at the base. The bold black outlines are paired with orange-brown shading on the skull, red accents around the eyes and background, and green leaves filling the top and bottom corners. The piece is composed as a symmetrical, classic flash-style emblem on a limb.

The wheel came up out of the Tallow mud on a Tuesday, chain still looped through three spokes and a tin box wedged in the hub. Dennis Pryce got there first, because he always did, and he sat in the ooze with it across his knees while the rest of us stood on the sea wall shouting that it was ours to split five ways. He prised the lid off and held up the brass skull inside, green at the eye sockets, grinning at the gulls.

We had a map drawn on the back of a bread wrapper and a dog called Admiral, who had no interest in treasure and only wanted the crab. Somebody painted NEVER SAY DIE across the boathouse door that summer, in red, because Dennis said a crew without a motto was just a lot of wet kids. I was the one who lettered it, with a ruler, and I was the one who got told off for the G, which I had made too round.
The box held no gold. It held a folded sheet of ship's paper with a column of names going back to 1931, each one followed by a single word. Gone. Gone. Gone. Under the last one, in pencil so faint I had to tilt it to the lamp, was Dennis's grandfather's name, and beside it, in a different hand, the word back.
Dennis didn't speak for an hour. Then he took the pencil from behind his ear and wrote our five names underneath, and the dog's, and he left a space at the bottom for the word. The wheel hangs in the boathouse now, spokes oiled, and each August the new crew reads the banner aloud before they go down to the mud, and nobody has yet had the nerve to ask what goes in the space.
