Realistic skull on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large, highly detailed skull fills the upper arm, shown in three-quarter view with the eye socket and cheekbone visible. The bone surface uses soft brown and rust tones with deep black shadows in the sockets and along the jaw, giving a sense of depth and texture. The skull sits against a dark background, with the edge of a tank top strap visible at the top of the frame.

Dear Tomasz, the bishop's man came up the mountain road again on Tuesday, and I have been sitting with the new bones since, trying to decide what to tell you about the cellar. You asked whether the work is still holy when it is mostly sorting. I think it is. Yesterday I lifted a skull from the third shelf and found it had been dropped once, long ago, and mended with a wire through the left cheekbone. Someone cared enough to fix it and then cared enough to put it back among the others rather than throw it out.

Brother Anselm says the ossuary was dug out when the plague came and the monks had no room left in the yard. Their names went into the ledger but the faces went into the dark. I have started, a little foolishly, to give them back their faces in my head. This one has a rust-brown look from the damp, a hollow above the cheek where the light from the high window never reaches, and the teeth are still sound. I call him Elias, because the ledger says an Elias Dorn was buried in the autumn of that year and the wire suggests he was a carpenter.
Last night I carried him up to the refectory and set him by the candle while I ate. Brother Anselm came in, saw the skull grinning at his soup, and crossed himself so hard he nearly knocked the bowl over. We laughed until the lay sister came to see what was wrong. Then he sat down opposite and said, quite gently, that Elias would have preferred a warm room to a cold one.
So I am taking him back to the cellar in the morning, but I am giving him the chair by the stove first. Write when the snow lets the post through.
