Realistic skull and cherry blossoms on a calf
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A large skull is shown in detailed, three-dimensional shading with dark eye sockets and teeth, set against a pinkish cracked background. Red-outlined cherry blossoms sit above and below the skull, with a few faded blossoms in grey. The composition is tall and fills the frame, with the skin's curve and a wooden floor visible at the edges.

The paint on the cabin side had split into plates, the way mud does when the cut runs low in August, and you spent the whole morning at Hatton Lock picking at it with your thumbnail. Your grandmother had told you not to. The skull under the flakes, she said, was the boat's real owner, and it did not care for impatient hands.

Nell Haskett had painted it the spring the Rose Lady went down at Braunston, with the crew still aboard and nobody to blame but the weather. She worked on the cabin in the orchard at Stoke Bruerne, where the blossom came down so thick that petals stuck to the wet undercoat, and rather than scrape them off she outlined each one in red, so the dead would have something pretty to look at while they waited for the water to give them back. The grin she gave the skull was for the lock-keeper, who had once told her a woman alone on the cut would sink by Michaelmas.
You found the rest of her by accident, a patch of grey near the jaw that came away under your nail like skin off warm milk. Beneath it, in pencil so faint you had to tilt your head to the light, was a column of names and dates, and at the bottom a line in her hand: keep the blossom wet and they will not come up for you. Your own name was not there. You checked twice.
The gates groaned and the water began to fall, and you pressed a single petal from your coat pocket into the dark socket where the paint had come away. It stuck. Below you the lock drained with a long, patient sound, and the skull looked up at the sky through its one good eye, and for once it seemed to be smiling at you.
