I told her roses did not come back from a pressure failure. She said the packet had been sealed in wax, and nobody seals wax around something they mean to throw away.

We planted it in the drained hydroponic tray nearest the window, where the skull-shaped bulkhead lamp threw its shadow across the soil. The old engineers had painted those lamps with roses in the eye sockets, a joke from before the long sleep, and nobody on the crew would take them down. Ines talked to the seedling in the mornings. I checked the lamp timer and pretended not to listen.

Three weeks later a single red bloom opened, dark at the edges as if the light had bruised it. Ines cut it and pinned it to her collar. Nobody argued. Dead things were allowed a little colour on Tessaly Deep, and the rest of us had stopped asking what the rules were for.

When the relief shuttle docked, the pilot asked what the garden was for. Ines took the bloom from her collar and laid it on the hatch seal. "For whoever comes next," she said, and the air recyclers hummed as if they agreed.
