Skull and red roses on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A large tattoo of a shaded grey skull overlaps two red roses, with a dotwork mandala and leaf outlines filling the background. The skull is rendered in smooth greys with strong highlights, while the roses use vivid red with soft shading. The composition wraps around the upper arm and shoulder, with the geometric dotted background framing the central skull.

The skull turned up on Tuesday, half buried in the nettles by the old well house. Its jaw was still wired shut with rust, and someone had scratched a ring of tiny dots around the brow, little stars or seeds, as if they had meant to draw a rosette and given up. I carried it up to the solar and set it on the windowsill beside the candle stub, and I confess I have grown fond of its company.

The village children say the castle keeps a quiet tenant. Mrs Hale swears the skull rolls back to the same spot each morning, and I have not had the heart to tell her I moved it twice myself. Yesterday I found a rose petal tucked into one of its eye sockets, fresh, with the dew still on it, and I laughed out loud for the first time since the funeral.

So I am writing to ask whether you will come up for the midsummer fair. Bring the good shears. The roses want pruning, the knot garden needs its dotted borders redrawn, and between us I think we might finally persuade the skull to sit at the head of the table where it belongs. Your loving sister, Clara.
