Skull with scrollwork in neo-trad style

Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash

A drawn design of a human skull with its jaw open, centred within grey acanthus-style scrollwork and red ribbon-like panels. Shading is smooth and grey, with dotted borders and small diamond shapes around the edges. Red and black ink dominate the composition, which is angled on a sheet of paper with pens at the edges of the frame.

The gilt on the frame has gone green at the corners, and the skull sits in the middle of it like a guest who arrived early. You work under the strip light of the lock-up with the shutter down, rain ticking on the tin roof, while the city beyond the bolt holes hums like a fridge left open. The commission came in a cardboard box with no name, only a note in block capitals: restore the cushion, keep the teeth.

The red silk has frayed into ribbon ends that curl over the scrolls, the colour of pillar box paint gone brown at the edges. Every acanthus leaf needs gesso, then a fine brush loaded with grey, and you lose track of time in the slow work of it. Around two, a van idles outside, its engine stuttering and stopping, then a soft knock on the shutter. You don't open it. Nobody collecting from a lock-up at that hour has ever been good company.

When you lift the lower gem with tweezers to reseat it, you find a folded slip of paper tucked behind the setting. It holds a list of addresses in a neat, careful hand, each one crossed through except the last, which is the lock-up itself. Your own name sits beside it, written in the same ink as the note on the box.

At dawn you press the stone back into its setting, leave the warmer glass where it has always been, and set the frame in the window. The first bus pulls past, and the skull grins at the glass as if it has been waiting all night for someone to notice.
