Sleeping fox in a swirling floral frame
Fine line · Colour · Flash
A fox lies curled and asleep, with its head resting on its tail, inside a circular frame of flowing scrolls and leaf-like curls. The linework is fine and dense, with stippled shading on the fox's ears and body. Warm red, orange and cream washes fill the fox and the scrolls, set against a yellowed paper background.

Mara of the Sallow Terraces had been told by her grandmother that the fox on the seed-wall slept only when the wind turned. The terraces were grown on the inside of a ring station, and the scrolled vines that climbed its frame had been planted by people nobody remembered. Every spring the vines curled tighter, and every spring the fox came down from the rim to lie in the lowest loop, nose on tail, and did not wake until the frost.

The trouble came the year the water pumps failed. Oren the pump-keeper wanted the loop cleared for copper pipe. He took his cutters up the frame at first light and found the fox already there, asleep, as though it had been waiting for him. He said he would only move it. Mara followed him with a lamp and asked what the fox had ever taken from him. He had no answer, so he sat down on the cold rim and listened to the vines ticking as they grew.
They sat until the light came round the curve of the ring. Oren talked about his brother, who had gone out on the long freight run and never come back. Nobody cut the loop. When the fox finally lifted its head, it looked at neither of them, only at the vines, and then sank again into its curl.
Oren went down and mended the pumps with wire salvaged from the old hatch. The fox slept on. Mara's grandmother said that was the whole of the lesson: what sleeps in the ring is kept by the ring, and what is kept may take its time. The copper pipe went green in the store, and the loop stayed gold in the morning.
