Wolf head sketch flash design
Black and grey · Flash
A loose sketch of a wolf's head in profile-leaning three-quarter view, with pointed ears and a focused gaze. The design uses fine dark linework, sketchy hatching and soft grey shading, with ink splashes and tapering strokes around the edges. It is drawn in black and grey on a warm tan paper background.

The wolf came aboard at Tromsø with a rope knotted round its neck and no owner who would come forward, and by the third week out the crew had stopped asking whose it was. It sat on the forecastle hatch and watched the water the way the cook watched a pot, patient and a little sour, its ears pricked into the wind.

When the fog came down on the grey fortnight, the captain lost his bearings and the compass spun like a dropped coin. Old Ingrid, who had buried two husbands at sea and did not frighten easily, climbed to the bow and found the wolf standing with its muzzle lifted into the mist. "Well," she said, "then lead." It went over the rail and down the side, and the men tied a line to its collar and followed the slack of it, hand over hand, through white nothing.
They came out under a split of blue sky beside a reef no chart had ever shown them, and the ship slid through a gap no wider than its own beam. Nobody spoke until the anchor was down. The wolf shook the damp from its coat, looked back once at the water, and lay down on the deck as though it had been asleep the whole time.
Ingrid paid it in salt herring that night and said nothing of it to the captain. Some sailors still claim the wolf walks the forecastle of every boat she ever sailed on, but the cook swears that is only the sea leaning its shoulder against the timbers, waiting to be asked the way home.
