The last tram had gone up Fargate by the time Mrs Okafor's boots came through the back door, soaked through and smelling of the canal. Nobody brings a pair in at eleven at night unless they need them at six, and I stopped asking years ago. On the wall above the stitching machine hangs a tin lid he hammered flat, a skull and a crossed awl scratched into its face, and beneath it a pencilled grid of interlocking diamonds he called the Sheffield knot. He swore it kept a welt from splitting. I never believed him until the stitching on the left heel gave way and I spent three hours rebuilding it to his pattern, thread over thread, while the rain ran down the window and bus lights swept across the ceiling.
At half past two the bell rang again. It was not Mrs Okafor but her granddaughter, who said her gran had gone into hospital on Tuesday and would not be needing the boots, but wanted them done for the chapel on Friday. She stood in the doorway with her hood up and didn't ask what it would cost.
I tied them off in the double knot Mrs Okafor always used, the one that holds without strangling, and handed them over. The girl laced the left boot standing, one foot on the bench, and never once looked at me. Outside the canal was black and the sky above the Moor had begun to pale, and I thought of all the miles those boots had walked that I would never know about.
