Dear Tomasz, the tide tables you left on the dresser have gone soft at the folds from my thumb, so I have pinned them to the wall above the kettle where I can see them while I wait. The Marguerite came in on Tuesday with her hull scraped to the wood and nobody aboard wanted to say how far they had dragged her. I walked down to the slip this morning with the dog and found the old anchor you never got round to shifting, the one with the ring worn bright by a hundred mooring lines. Someone had chalked a small heart on the flat of the arm, and under it, in a hand I did not recognise, the word home. I left it alone. Pilchard has taken a liking to the thing and will not pass it without a sniff.

The wind has gone round to the north-east, which you will say means nothing, and I will say means the herring boats will be late. Come back on the evening flood if you can. I have kept the lamp trimmed and the kettle warm, and I have stopped pretending I can read the tables without you reading them aloud.

Yours, Annie
