Small anchor tattoo on a finger
Traditional · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black anchor with a rope detail sits on the side of a finger. The outlines are bold and solid, with little shading, and the ink is crisp against the skin. The hand rests on a wooden edge in the foreground, with a tattooed forearm to the left and a blurred figure at the right edge.

The tide table said high water at four, and the ferry from across the estuary was late because the mate had lost a bowline somewhere off the sandbar. I stood under the customs shed with my clipboard and watched the grey boat nose in against the pontoon, its fenders squeaking against the piles. Nobody expected much from the Thursday crossing except cigarettes and tired birdwatchers.

The man who came down the gangway carried a tin trunk and a passport that had been wet and dried stiff, its pages curling like bark. I asked the usual questions. He answered in a careful voice, and when I asked the purpose of his visit he said he was going to find the Halcyon Jane, a steel ketch his father had sailed before the war, last seen rotting in a creek near Orford. He said it as if it were a place he could still walk to.
The trunk held no contraband, only a coil of old manila and a brass anchor the size of a teacup, gone green at the crown. I asked whether it was dutiable. He laughed and said it had never been worth anything to anyone but his father. I turned it over in the grey light and saw the flukes had been worn smooth by thumbs over the years. I wrote personal effects, nil, and stamped the form.
After he had gone up the lane with his trunk on a borrowed barrow, I found I still had the spare length of rope in my hands. Out of habit I tied a rolling hitch round the shed post, the way my own father taught me, then untied it before the next lorry rattled onto the pontoon. In the margin of the form, beside the nil, I drew a small anchor in biro, the way you mark a place you mean to come back to.
