Anchor tattoo on the inner upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A simple black anchor with a ring at the top, a crossbar, and curved flukes ending in points, drawn in solid black outline. The anchor is centred on smooth skin, with a small heart-shaped detail at the base of the shank. The ink is uniform black with no shading or colour, and the image is framed closely on the arm with fabric visible at the right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rings are in your left trouser pocket, wrapped in a bit of tissue, and the vicar has just asked for them when you realise the tissue is gone. Somewhere between the car park and the marquee the gold has worked free, and you are standing on wet grass at Porthmellin with two hundred guests watching you pat your hips like a man hunting for his keys.

Uncle Dessie taught you to tie a bowline on the slipway the summer you were nine. He had a saying about the anchor stitched on the back of his old oilskin: it doesn't hold the boat still, it holds the boat to the bottom, so the boat can swing with the tide and still come home. You thought it was nonsense then. You think about it now, crouched in the grass, while the bride's sister holds up a phone torch and says nothing kind.

The ring is under the trestle nearest the tent pole, snagged on a peg and glinting like a fish scale. You pick it up, and Morwenna, the groom's mother, laughs so hard she has to sit down on a crate of cider. Owen takes the ring from your palm without looking at it, his eyes on you, and says his grandad would have lost it too, and then lost the bride's ring as well.

Later, when the speeches are done and the band has started on something old and slow, Morwenna finds you by the bar. She presses a cold brass charm into your hand, a small anchor with a heart stamped at its foot, worn smooth as a pebble. 'Keep it in your pocket,' she says. 'Then you'll always know where it is.'
