Dilys knelt on the cold lino of the back room with the lamp pulled close, sorting capital Rs from lower-case ks by feel, her thumbs grey with ink that would not wash off until Friday.

They were printing invitations for a funeral parlour in Hull, which was not the usual work, but the owner paid in cash and asked for nothing fancy. Ruth set the last line herself, backwards in the composing stick, muttering the words under her breath as if she were reciting a prayer. Dilys had learned that the reversing was the hard part. Outside, the sky over the car park shifted from black to the colour of wet slate. Dilys inked the bed, pulled the lever, and lifted the first sheet. The impression sat deep and even in the cream stock. She held it up to the window and turned it the right way round, and the words read clean for the first time that morning, a stranger's grief set out in small, neat capitals.

Ruth took the sheet from her without a word, ran a thumb over the letters to feel the bite, and nodded once. Dilys went back to the drawer. There were still forty sorts in the wrong box, and the van would be at the kerb by seven.
