Small script lettering on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A woman wears a white bralette, an open blue shirt and light denim shorts, with her midriff and torso in view and her face cropped out. A small black cursive script word sits on her left side below the ribcage, with thin, even linework and no shading. The image is in full colour with a plain light background, and the tattoo is the only ink visible.

Dear Owen, The beans have gone mad this year, climbing the netting faster than Mr Pascoe can cut them back, so I have tied the last canes to the shed with baler twine. Your mother says you are not eating properly up in that flat, so I am posting the seed packets and a jar of blackcurrant jam, which you will pretend not to like.

I found your grandfather's notebook when I was clearing the potting bench. He wrote every sowing in it, in that slanting hand he learnt from the nuns at St Ives, and on the last page, beneath the parsnip dates, he had written one word and underlined it twice. I have sat with it all afternoon and I still cannot decide whether he meant the garden or the people who stood in it. I will not tell you what it says. Read the page yourself when you come down.

This morning I took the notebook to the bottom bed and found the first parsnip he ever sowed there, still standing, gone to seed and bowing in the wind like it was waiting for someone. I left the page open on the bench under a flat stone so the breeze would not turn it.

Come on Sunday. Bring your boots, and bring whatever word you have been carrying about in your head since the spring. We will see whether the soil agrees with it.
