Small fine line marks on forearm and hip

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a person in a white knit top and light blue jeans, with the arm bent and the hand in a pocket. A few small black marks sit on the inner forearm near the wrist, and a small black symbol sits on the side of the abdomen just above the waistband. The linework is thin and simple with no shading, and the image is set against a plain white background, so the ink is the only colour.

The telegraph office at Saltmarsh Quay smelled of wet wool and paraffin, and Ada Pennock had learned to read the weather from the rhythm of the key. Since the gale took the cable at Harrow Point, messages had come by lamp instead, flashed from the rock in the bay. Every night at a quarter to midnight the same short sequence arrived: two dots, a dash, a dash, then a looping stroke that no code book in the office could name.

The harbour master called it a faulty shutter. Ada copied it into the ledger anyway, under a heading she wrote herself, Unexplained, and kept her pencil sharp. On the ninth night she noticed the loop always fell at the hour the tide turned over the Sker bar. The next morning she took the ferry out with Tobias Gale, who rowed without asking why the telegraph clerk wanted a rock nobody had landed on since spring.

The keeper's cottage door was open. Inside, a slate on the table held a week of signals in chalk, each one a row of marks ending in that same looped stroke, and beside them a note in a careful hand: the bar would take the Mary Anne if no one warned her. Ada read it twice, then climbed the lamp stairs, where the lens was still warm and the shutter sat ready on its brass hinge.

She tapped out the warning in the keeper's rhythm, two dots, a dash, a dash, and the loop at the end. Across the water a boat turned hard for the shelter of the quay, and the answering flash came back before she had lifted her hand from the lever.
