Small arrow tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small black arrow tattoo on the side of a finger, held up towards the camera. The shaft is a thin single line with a pair of chevron fletchings at the tail and a solid arrowhead at the tip. The ink is black with no shading, set against pale skin and a dark and white striped top.

Nell Harker had been sent out to mark the footpath before the mist came down, and she had a tin of chalk and a bad feeling about the stile. She was on her knees under the hawthorn at Cold Bottom when the Ashby boy came over the rise, hatless and muddy to the knee, asking which way was the village.

She didn't answer him straight away. She drew one arrow on the stone post, a single thin line with two chevrons at the back and a solid head pointing down the hill. "Follow that until the wall stops," she said. "The next one will be there." He laughed, thinking she was joking, and when he looked again the next one was there, chalked on the gatepost where he would have sworn there had been nothing.
By the end of the week there were forty arrows along the lane, some chalked, some scratched into bark with a penknife, one painted in tar on the bridge. The council sent a man in a grey van who wanted to know who had authorised them. Nell said nobody had. The man studied the arrows for a long time, then the fog lying white in the fields, and then he got back in his van and drove the long way round.
Years later the boy, grown and married in Leeds, sent her a postcard of a stile. On the back he had drawn a small arrow pointing at her name, and nothing else. She tucked it into the frame of the kitchen mirror, where she could see the direction it gave, which was always home.
