Bow and arrow finger tattoos
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A simple bow is drawn in a single black line along one finger, and an arrow with a heart-shaped nock runs across the adjacent finger. The linework is thin and even, with small feathered fletching and no shading. The ink is black on pale skin, and the close framing keeps the two fingers centred against a dark blurred background.

Now you listen, because my father told this one at the Coronation dance and swore on the church bell that every word was true. Back in fifty-three, the archery butts behind the Crown were the only place in Harrowden where a lad and a lass could stand a yard apart without the whole parish counting the feet between them. Dorothy Pask could hit a farthing at forty paces, and Eddie Lunn could not hit the barn, so naturally she spent every Thursday teaching him to draw a bow with his fingers rather than his arms.

She had a trick, see. She'd carve a little heart into the nock of every arrow she loosed, so you could tell her shafts from the vicar's when they sank in the straw. Eddie thought it was soppy. He told her so, loud enough for the ladies at the tea urn to hear, and she shot him a look that pinned his coat to the post. The next Thursday he came back with a bow he'd whittled from ash, pale as a bone, and a string of cat gut he'd begged off the butcher's boy.
What he never managed was the one shot she'd dared him to make, which was to send an arrow the length of the lane and have it land, fletching first, in the palm of her hand. He tried all summer. The arrows kept dropping in the hedge. Then in September the lane flooded, the Crown shut its doors, and Eddie went up to Leeds for work at the foundry and didn't write.
So when she married the postman that Christmas, she hung the old bow on the hook behind her kitchen door and told nobody why. And if you go past that cottage today, the window's still open, and the bow's still there, and the arrow's still in the hedge, waiting for a hand to catch it.
