Arrow tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small arrow is drawn in black ink along the upper part of a finger, with a three-feathered fletching on the left and a solid arrowhead on the right. The linework is thin and even, and the ink appears crisp against the skin. The finger fills the frame against a dark leather surface and a red patterned rug in the background.

Nobody in our village believed Tomas could hit a barn door at twenty paces, least of all his mother, so when the bailiff's clerk came with his ledger and asked who had shot the hare off the vicar's wall, he said it was the lad who could not shoot at all. The clerk wrote it down. He wrote everything down that year, the price of eels, the fences, who owed the miller a sack of barley.

Tomas spent the afternoon in the ash-wood behind the mill, cutting shafts with a borrowed knife and cursing the grain when it split. His father had made bows before the fever took him, and the tools still hung in the dry corner where the rats had not yet found them. By dusk he had six arrows, straight enough, fletched with three grey feathers each, the way his father had shown him with a goose quill and a thread of sinew.
The clerk came back at the new moon, wanting to know why the hare had been left on the wall for three days. Tomas handed him one arrow and pointed at the rooks in the elm across the lane. The clerk laughed until he saw the bird fall, and then he stopped laughing, and wrote nothing at all.
