Small arrow tattoo on ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small black arrow with a fine shaft and a pointed head sits on the side of an ankle, angled from the heel towards the front of the foot. The linework is thin and solid, with little or no shading, and the skin is light. The photograph is taken from behind and above, with a dark knit sock at the top of the frame and a black sandal with a gold buckle at the bottom.

Dear Hanne, the mason at Carrow Keep says the north tower will stand another winter if nobody leans on it, so I have been leaning on nothing and writing to you instead. Wat has taken me off the bow-shop floor and set me to the last shafts of the season. He says my hand is steady enough now to feather a shaft that will fly true into the wind off the marsh.

Wat keeps the old goose wings in a crate under the window, and he is particular about the angle of every vane. You turn the feather a hair from the shaft, he told me, so the air does the work for you. I did not believe him until I shot one across the courtyard yesterday and watched it bend round the well-head and strike the gate post dead centre. The boys cheered. Wat only grunted and told me to make a dozen more before the rain.
Last week a sack of arrows went missing from the ruin by the river, and the steward came round asking whose work they were. I told him mine, and then I went looking. In the broken sill of the chapel window I found one still standing, its head pointing back down the slope towards the south road. Nobody had pulled it out. I took it home and have kept it under my pillow, because it is the straightest thing I have ever made.
