A hand rests on a textured, sandy-coloured surface, with the side of one finger showing three stacked black chevrons drawn in thin, even lines. The tattoo is simple and geometric, with no shading, and sits near the finger joint. The image is shot close up, with a silver band on the neighbouring finger and a soft grey background.

The drift had climbed past the second hinge of the back door by the time Mrs Pask sent me out with a stub of charcoal from the range, so I knew it would be a long week. The Fallow Arms sat alone on the moor road, and the coach that was meant to take the piano salesman and the widow with the grey parrot had gone into a ditch two miles off. Nobody was going anywhere until the wind dropped.

Every morning I went to the back door before the kitchen fire was lit and drew a chevron on the frame at the line where the snow met the wood, point down, the way Mrs Pask had shown me. One stroke for each arm, the arms meeting at the bottom like a rafter. Her husband had kept the marks the winter the mill flooded, and she said the door remembered every drift that ever mattered. I did not believe her, but I liked the sound of it.

The first morning the snow sat level with the hinge. The second morning it had crept a finger's width higher, so I drew a second chevron above the first, then a third on the fourth morning, when the wind had dropped to a sigh and the sky looked thin and pale. Three stacked marks, and the snow stopped climbing. By the Sunday it had begun to sink back down the wood, and the parrot swore at it in a voice like a bosun.

When the plough finally came grinding up the road, I stood at the door with my palm flat against the three black points and felt the cold come through the frame. Mrs Pask came out wiping her hands and looked at the marks for a long time. Then she took the charcoal from my fingers, drew a small arrow beneath the lowest chevron pointing back toward the inn, and said that was so the next one knew which way was home.
