She followed the one bee that still flew low over the wheat. It went past the mill, past the gallows field where the crows sat, and into the old chapel where the king's grandmother had once been buried with her jewels. Inside, the bee settled on the lid of the stone coffin and walked, very slowly, to the place where the lid met the wall. There was a crack there no wider than a fingernail. She went home and wrote on a scrap of linen the one thing her grandmother had taught her about bees: that they carry news from flower to flower, and that a hive will always go where it is most needed. Then she tied the linen to the smallest of the surviving hives and carried it up the hill to the palace gate.

The guards laughed until they saw what was inside the hive. By the next morning the whole valley was humming again, and the king, who had never once in his life asked where the honey came from, came down the hill himself with his hat in his hands.
