Fine line chain and moon wrist tattoo
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A hand and wrist are shown, with a fine line tattoo that resembles a delicate bracelet. A thin curved line carries a row of dots, with a small diamond shape hanging from its centre and a crescent moon on each side. The linework is crisp and even, and the tattoo is rendered in solid black ink against the pale skin, with the greyscale photograph and plain background keeping the focus on the design.

Dear Nell,

The rain has been coming sideways across the Corn Exchange car park since Tuesday, and Mr Okafor's awning has sprung a leak right over my tray of loose links, so I have spent the afternoon fishing sterling chain out of puddles. You would laugh. I am writing this on the back of a receipt book because my notebook is wet through and the ink has run in blue streaks down every page.
Yesterday a woman came to the stall with a sheet of paper folded in four. On it someone had drawn a bracelet that was not quite a bracelet: one thin line dipping low, a row of tiny dots strung along it like beads on nothing, a little diamond hanging from the middle, and a crescent moon on either side. She wanted it made in silver, fine as a hair. I told her I could solder the links but not the dots, and she said she would manage the dots herself with a pin and a steady hand. She only needed the chain.
When I asked whose drawing it was, she unfolded the paper again and smoothed it flat on the counter with her palm. Her gran had sketched it on the back of a button card in 1962, she said, the summer the canal froze over. The dots were the lamps along the towpath, forty-one of them, and the diamond was the bridge. Gran had never worn it. She had only drawn it so she would remember which lamps were lit on the walk home.
I made the chain that night under my lamp, counting dots until my eyes watered. This morning I hung the finished length on the awning hook where the rain runs off, and for a moment it hung in a neat silver curve like the line on that paper. Write back and tell me whether the canal lamps are still lit on your side of town. I will keep counting.
Love, Pip
