The kiln had cracked its lip again, so Mother sent me down to the clay pit by the river with a basket and a stick to test the bank. I was twelve and had spent three summers watching the painters work the black slip. Nobody let me touch the brush.

On the third morning a boat came up the Kephisos with its sail torn, and the sailor who climbed out asked for a cup that would hold wine without weeping through the clay. He had lost his brother on the crossing from Aegina. He wanted a single wave painted beneath the lip, nothing more, a line that curled once and came to rest. The master told him to return in a day. The sailor sat on the step and did not leave, and I swept around his feet pretending I had work to do.

That night, while the master drank with the potters from the Kerameikos, I took his finest brush and a cup still soft from the wheel. My hand shook on the first stroke, the line thin as a hair. I curled it over, lifted, curled again, then wiped the excess away with the heel of my palm until the stroke was only what it needed to be. Afterwards I sat in the dark with my fingers stained black and waited for the beating I had earned.

In the morning the sailor turned the cup in the light and said nothing for so long I believed I had spoiled it. Then he paid double and asked who had painted it. The master pointed at me with his wine cup. The sailor drank, set the cup down on the bench, and said his brother would have laughed at a wave so small. He walked down to the water with the empty cup under his arm, and I kept the brush.
