Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small sprig of five or six solid black leaves runs diagonally along the ankle, with simple outlines and no shading. The skin is light and the tattoo is the only strong dark mark in the frame. The photo is taken close up at an angle, with a grey suede trainer and dark trouser hem occupying the left and right sides.

Brother Edric kept the garden below the north wall, where the wind came off the moor and nothing soft would grow. In the spring of the hard winter he found a cutting pushed into the frozen earth by the gate, its stem wrapped in a strip of wet linen with a note he could not read. The porter said a carter had left it for the abbot and driven off before anyone asked him what it was.

The abbot sent for the herbalist from the village, a widow named Maud Carrow, who held the paper to the lamp and laughed at them both. It was a sprig of bay, she said, the kind that grows on the warm side of a country the monks had never walked to. Whoever sent it wanted the monastery to keep something green through a season that had nothing green in it.

Edric set the cutting in a clay pot beside the kitchen hearth, where the bread was baked. He watered it from the rain butt and turned it toward the window each morning, and he did not tell the abbot when the first leaf went black at the tip, nor when the second followed. By midsummer five leaves hung from the stem, dark and stiff as ink, and the brothers argued over whether the plant was dying or only growing into something stranger.

In the autumn the carter came back up the road with an empty cart and a boy beside him. He asked for the gardener, looked at the pot for a long time, and said only that his sister had been married by the sea the year before, and that the bay had been the only thing she asked to keep. Edric gave him the pot. The carter carried it down the hill with both hands, careful not to spill a single crumb of soil.
