Botanical branches and dotted crescent on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A slender branch with two small open flowers and a secondary stem sits on the inner wrist, with a thin dotted crescent arc beside it. The linework is delicate and uniform, in black ink only, with the dots giving a light, stippled edge to the arc. The tattoo is centred on a plain forearm against a wooden table, with a checked cuff at the bottom of the frame.

The moon was only a paring that night, so the only light on the quay came from my grandmother's torch and the two pale flowers I had cut from the wall. Ada had sent me down with a jam jar, a pin and her almanac, and told me not to let the stem touch salt water. I did as I was told, which is how I came to be kneeling on cold stone when the mail boat slid past the breakwater without its lamps lit.

Teddy Pascoe came up the steps with his oilskin open and a lantern swinging from one hand. He looked at the jar before he looked at me. "Ada's night-blooms," he said. "They only open when the moon's on the turn, and they shut the minute she's full. Every boatman in this harbour knows to watch them." He crouched beside me and tilted the lantern so the petals showed, two small open bells on a bent branch, the stalks as fine as hair. In the almanac on my knee, Ada had drawn a crescent in dots, one for each night she had watched it grow.
I counted the dots while he talked. There were twenty-eight, and the last one had been pricked into the margin that very morning, still wet. The pilot on the mail boat had been watching the same wall, and he knew the flowers meant the tide would turn before the lamps could be trusted. Teddy grunted, unhooked his lantern, and walked it along the quay towards the slipway, where the boat was already coming in slow and blind.
I pressed the pin through the final dot so the paper would hold the mark. Behind me, in the jam jar, the two flowers were folding shut one petal at a time, and out past the breakwater a light came on.
