Lavender sprigs on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A small botanical design of three sprigs with thin dark stems and purple flower clusters, rising diagonally up the front of the lower leg above the ankle. The linework is fine and delicate, with soft purple shading filling the blooms. A white canvas shoe and laces sit in the background against a pale floor.

Dear Marguerite, the lavender on the south terraces of Vessaly came into flower three weeks early this year, and the old women at the mill say it is because the frost never came. I have not believed them until now. I walked the rows at dawn with my sample case and found the stems already bowed under purple heads, the bees drunk and slow on them. I cut three sprigs for the herbarium and pressed them between the pages of the Harrow atlas, where they will stay flat and grey long after the terraces have been ploughed under for the spring wheat.

The steward asked why a botanist of the crown would bother with weeds. I told him lavender is no weed, that the Vessalian kings once paid their tithes in dried bundles, and that a flower which keeps its colour in a drawer is worth more than a field of gold that rots in a granary. He laughed and offered me his daughter's ribbon for the cuttings. I declined, though I wish now I had taken it, because she was tying her hair back with it the whole time and I could not stop watching the wind move through the rows behind her.
I leave for the coast on the Tuesday tide. Keep the lamp lit in the east window, and if the ferryman asks, tell him the sprigs are for the queen's garden and not for the dyers. I will write from Port Anselm. Your loving sister, Iris.
