Small blue butterfly on the lower abdomen

Other · Colour · Photo

A small butterfly with outstretched wings sits on bare skin at the hip or lower abdomen, above the waistband of denim jeans. The wings are outlined in black and filled with blue and teal tones, with lighter dots and inner wing details. The tattoo is shown in close, slightly angled view against a plain, softly lit background of skin and clothing.

The fair came to Pelling Green the week after the first frost, as it always did, and the ghost-train man was already drunk when the wagons rolled in. Old Hesketh Marr had painted the ticket board himself twenty-two years earlier, and in one corner he had put a butterfly no bigger than a thumbnail, blue as a kingfisher's back, edged in black, with a pale fleck on each wing where a spark of light should be.

His granddaughter Ivy swept the sawdust and counted the coins. She asked him why there was a butterfly on the board when there were no butterflies in October. He said the board had asked for one. She did not believe him and told him so, and he laughed until he coughed into his sleeve.

On the last night of the fair, Ivy found the board face down in the mud with its varnish lifting. The butterfly had come loose from the wood. It sat on her wrist, cold and light, and its wings opened and closed like a hinge nobody had oiled in years. She carried it to the lorry and set it on the seat beside her grandfather, and when she looked back at the field the board was bare.

Hesketh never painted another board. Every spring after that, the fair found a blue wing folded into the corner of the cash box, and nobody could say who had put it there, least of all Ivy, who stopped counting the coins and started keeping them.
