3D butterfly on a shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A close crop of a shoulder and upper chest showing a butterfly tattoo with outstretched wings, edged in black and filled with pink and blue. Fine shading and highlights give the wings a lifted, three-dimensional look, and a soft grey shadow falls beneath them on the skin. The skin shows freckles, and a black and white polka dot top is visible at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The butterfly has been sitting on the windowsill of Room Four since Tuesday, and Mrs Pargeter insists it is a sign, though she will not say of what. You carry the breakfast tray past it each morning with the careful half-step of someone who has been told not to startle things. The guests at Seaview House are mostly widowers and retired schoolteachers who come for the tide tables and the damp, and none of them has noticed that the wings are going pink at the edges, the way paper does when the sun reaches it.

On Thursday the sea fog came in thick and the lamps were lit by four. You found the butterfly on the floor beside the radiator, wings folded, and for one awful second you thought it was dead. Then it lifted, not flapping but rising, and its shadow slid across the wallpaper, blue-black and enormous, far larger than anything so small had any right to throw. Mr Ferris in Room Six swore on his late wife's Bible that he saw it cross the ceiling like a kite.

You take it out onto the front step, where the wind off the Channel is wet and loud. Mrs Pargeter comes down the stairs in her good cardigan and stands beside you, and neither of you mentions the old story about her husband, who walked out along the pier in 1961 and came back without his shadow. The butterfly climbs the wind in widening loops until the fog swallows it. Below, on the wet flagstones, a soft grey shape stays a moment longer, then lifts too, and goes after it.
