Small botanical sprig design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A small bouquet of slender, pointed leaves and twigs, with a tie or bow at the stems, drawn in dark ink. The linework is single-weight and fairly fine, with simple leaf veins and some small oval buds. The design is set centrally on a pale, speckled cream background with no colour.

The frost had got into the well-house again, so Mary Ann Tolley broke the ice with the heel of her boot before she could fill the pail. Nobody in Hollin Bottom had spoken to her since her brother went over the ridge to find work in the mills.

On the third morning a bundle lay on the step, tied with a length of green wool. Inside were six sprigs of rosemary cut clean at the stem, the leaves still dark and oily under the cold. There was no note. Mary Ann knew the wool; it came from the Pennington sheep, and old Jack Pennington had a grudge against her mother going back thirty years over a boundary wall.
She took the herbs to the kitchen and put them in a jug of warm water, the way her mother used to for coughs. Her father drank it and slept without his cough rattling. The next morning there was another bundle, and the morning after that, and by the end of the week the step was never bare. She began to leave bread and a jar of honey on the stone in return, and the honey was gone by dusk.
In February the snow lifted and she walked up to the Pennington gate with her father's stick in one hand. Jack was out at the trough, breaking ice of his own. She held out the bow of green wool she had kept back, the one bit of the bundle she had not yet untied. He looked at it a long time, then took it and tucked it in his coat, and neither of them said a word about the wall.
