Line drawing of two daisy-style flowers on stems

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows two open, daisy-like flowers on thin, curving stems, with a few serrated leaves and two small loose petals or buds at the lower left. The linework is fine and even, with simple outlines and little or no shading, so the petals and leaves are defined by their edges. The design is centred on a plain white background in black ink only.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The letter came up from the valley with the carrier on a Tuesday, though nobody in Hollin Bank had seen him set out. Agnes Pell read it standing at the back door, her thumb holding the fold against the wind off the spoil heaps. Her brother Tom had written from the lower levels in a hand that leaned like a man walking into rain. The shift was longer than they had said. The cage had stuck at forty fathoms. He had been fine, he wrote, and he was sending the flowers he had picked from the bank above the old engine house, the ones with the yellow middles that grew where nothing else would.

There were no flowers in the envelope, only two dry petals, curled and brown at the edges, and a sprig of stalk pressed flat between the pages of the newspaper. Agnes laid them on the windowsill to catch the light and went out again to the pit gate, where the women were gathered in their shawls as they had been every morning since the whistle failed. Mrs Haig asked if there was news. Agnes said there was, and that it was mostly weather.

That night she walked up past the engine house by herself. The bank was bare, black with coal dust, but in a crack beside the wall two stems had come through the cinders, thin and bending towards each other as if they had something to say. Their heads were open and white, and when she bent to them she saw that the petals had edges finer than any hand could cut. She picked one, and then, after a moment, she left the other where it was, for whoever came up the lane next to see.
