Small circular sun tattoo on skin
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small circular tattoo with dark, short radiating strokes sits on a patch of skin that looks reddened around it, possibly from healing. The linework is bold and dark, with shading only in the strokes and no colour ink visible. The circle is centred in the frame against a soft, out-of-focus background of skin.

Sit closer, you with the cold hands, and mind the fire, because this is the part where the sun went out over the kingdom of Hollin Vale and the bakers forgot how to count their loaves. Nobody could say when the light had stopped, only that the mill wheels turned in grey, the hens stopped laying at noon, and the old queen sent for the one person in Hollin Vale who still kept a sun in her house: Marrit the lamp-mender, a widow with a tin of pins and a crooked thumb.

Marrit did not ask for gold. She asked for the biggest copper pan in the castle kitchens and a boy to hold the candle while she worked. All night she hammered the pan flat into a round disc, pricked it with a nail, and scored around its rim the short bright strokes her mother had taught her, the ones that look like a child's drawing of a flame. Each stroke she cut with the point of a knife, and each one she rubbed with ash until it caught the candlelight.
At dawn she hung the disc from the chapel tower, where the first sunrise would strike it. Nothing happened for a long while. The boy grew bored and began counting the spokes under his breath. Then the rim caught, a thin gold line crept across the cobbles, and every bakehouse in the kingdom flung open its shutters at once.
The queen paid Marrit in bread, which was all there was to pay with. So if you ever spot a sun scratched on a wall in Hollin Vale, touch it for luck, and know that somewhere up that tower the copper is still warm from her hands.
