Fine line botanical tattoo of a pink flower with a black script word trailing from its stem, placed on the upper chest near the collarbone.

Pink flower and script on collarbone

Fine line · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A small pink flower with soft, watercolour-style petals sits on the upper chest near the collarbone. A thin black stem runs from the bloom into a handwritten script word that tapers to a fine tail. The pink ink is blended with gentle shading, while the linework is delicate and even against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The seed tin had rattled in the glovebox since March, and Ada Pryce only opened it when the first red bloom split its green cap on the allotment wall. She pinched the stem between two fingers, the way her father had taught her, and carried the flower home in a jam jar without water, because the petals would hold better dry.

Her neighbour, Dev Okafor, who kept bees and talked to them, leaned on the gate and asked what she meant to do with it. Ada said she meant to press it inside the card her husband had written her in 1979, the one with the looping hand that ran off the edge of the paper as if it had somewhere better to be. She had never once managed to read a sentence in that hand without squinting, and he had never once minded.

She pressed the poppy between the card and the back board of the recipe book, weighted down with the atlas. Three weeks later, when the petals had gone the colour of old brick, she found the card had cracked along the fold and the flower had left a faint ghost of itself on the last line of his writing, so that the word seemed to drift off the paper on a thin stem.

Dev came round with honey and found her at the kitchen table with a pencil, tracing the ghost onto a fresh sheet. "You're copying him," he said. "No," said Ada, "I'm finishing the line."
