Small crescent moon on the back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small crescent moon is tattooed on the upper back, beside the shoulder blade, of a person with long blonde hair. The moon is drawn in thin dark grey or black linework with light shading. The photograph is warm toned, with a yellow dress strap and a bare shoulder filling the frame against a blurred sandy background.

The tent had been patched so many times that nobody could say which canvas was original. By the autumn the show had shrunk to four wagons, a grey mare called Penny, and a ringmaster who counted the takings twice because the first count always disappointed him. Old Ruan Pell took the mending in hand that year, sitting on an upturned crate by the back flap with a bone needle and a hank of waxed thread.

He cut a crescent from a scrap of dark grey sailcloth, the sort the fair folk used for pennants, and sewed it low on the flap where the lamplight fell. People said it was for luck. Ruan said it was for the moon, which had been out of work for a month of wet nights and had started to look thin.
The turn came on the last Saturday. A girl from the village walked in with her mother, saw nothing but a dim tent and two performers sweeping sawdust, and turned to leave. Penny, who had not been asked to do anything in years, lifted her head and trotted to the flap. The moon patch caught the lamp, the girl stopped to look at it, and then she sat down on the front bench and stayed until the lamps were out.
Ruan said afterwards the moon had only needed someone to notice it. Nobody argued, because the next season the show went back on the road with one more ticket taker than before.
