Small cross tattoo on a finger
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is held open toward the camera, with a small solid black cross tattooed on the side of one finger near the knuckle. The cross has simple, even lines and appears to be filled in with black ink. The photo is taken indoors against a wooden floor, a dark TV stand and a brown towel, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

There was a lad who came to the hook-a-duck every evening, always alone, always with the same worn penny. He never won the tin cross on the top shelf. Dad said the ducks were weighted to keep the cross where it was, which was a lie, but I liked the lad for believing it. On the Thursday he came with a paper twist of pennies he had counted out himself, and he asked me to leave the cross down where he could see it.
I lifted it off the shelf and set it on the counter, a flat little thing with the black paint worn thin at the edges. He turned it over the way you check a coin for its date, then put it back up on the shelf and asked for another go at the ducks. He missed every time. I think he only wanted an excuse to stand in the lamplight a minute longer.
When we moved on Saturday, the cross was still on the shelf, and I found the paper twist tucked under the till, folded eleven times, with a note inside that said only: keep it for whoever comes next. I kept it. It is still in my coat pocket, and I have never once thought of it as a prize.
