Sun and moon finger tattoos
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand held up against a plain beige wall shows two pairs of small tattoos, each pairing a sun with a crescent moon, placed on the side of two adjacent fingers. The linework is thin and simple, with the sun drawn as a circle with short rays and the moon as a open crescent, all in black ink. The composition is tightly framed on the fingers, with the tattoos sitting near the first knuckle and the nails painted dark.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
On the Ashby cut there was a narrowboat called the Patience, and on her lived a boy named Tobias Rudd who could never sit still. His mother painted a sun on the bow each spring so the river would know which way the boat was going, and a moon on the stern so it could watch what they left behind.

In the November the fog came down thick as wool. The lock-keeper's lamp shrank to a smudge and then to nothing, and the toll bell rang from the wrong side of the water. His mother sat him by the stove and said the cut takes one soul each winter unless someone offers it a fair trade. Tobias asked what a fair trade looked like. She said it had to be a thing of day and a thing of night, both given freely.
So he pricked a small sun onto one finger and a crescent moon onto the next, using soot from the stove and his grandmother's darning needle, and he went out onto the towpath with his hands held up like a lantern. He counted the bollards by touch. The sun finger found the cold iron rail; the moon finger found the curve of the lock gate. Halfway along, something caught at his sleeve. It was Mab Ferris, the keeper's daughter, who had gone in after a dropped glove and could not find the steps.
He gave her his two fingers to hold, sun in one hand and moon in the other, and they walked the wet stone together until the bell stopped. At first light the sun on the bow caught the thinning fog, and the river, for once, knew exactly where it was going.
