You will not believe what the lift men found behind the panel on the fourteenth floor. Mr Dunmore called me down from the boiler room with his torch still lit, so I went up in the goods lift with him, cursing the smell of hot dust. Somebody had scratched a cross into the breeze block at the back of the old laundry cupboard. Not a bad job either: two strokes, one short, one long, thin as a hair, the kind a child makes with a compass point when nobody is watching.

We could not decide whether to leave it. Dunmore wanted it painted over before the inspector came on Thursday. I said it had been there since before the cladding went on, and that the block was older than any of us, so who were we to scrape it off. We stood there arguing like a pair of pensioners outside the bookies until the landing light clicked off and left us in the dark with our phones.

I walked home along the deck with the cross still in my head. I have decided it was made by a girl who lived in flat 1409 in the eighties, who had nothing to draw on but her nerve. I have decided she is somewhere now with a ring of grandchildren and no memory of it. Don't tell Dunmore. He will want a reason, and I like it better without one.
