Small cross tattoo on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind with her hair up and one hand raised to it, wearing a pearl drop earring. A small, simple black cross is tattooed on the upper back, centred between the shoulder blades and just below the neck. The solid black line work sits against warm skin, with a plain, softly textured wall behind, and the composition keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The scaffold creaked all morning under the rain, and Dad kept telling me to stop looking up at the east gable. The chapel at Harrowgate Keep had been falling down since the Scots came through, so the wall was no great mystery. What bothered me was a single cross, no bigger than my palm, cut into a block high on the arch where no mason would waste a chisel on anything but the joint.

Mr Pell, who had dressed these stones for forty years, said it was a banker's mark, a way of saying the work was paid for and done. I didn't believe him. The cut was too careful and too plain, and its edges were worn smooth by hands rather than weather. When the lime gang broke for their tea I climbed the ladder with a brush and rubbed the grit out of it until the line stood dark against the grey.

Underneath, scratched so faintly I nearly missed it, were two sets of initials and the date, 1871. Mr Pell came up behind me and stood a long while without speaking. Then he said his own father had been the last man to work that gable, and that they had argued all one winter over whether a cross meant a prayer or a debt. He never settled it either.

That evening I took my chisel up the ladder, cut a small cross into the stone beside the old one, and left my initials beneath it with this year's date. Dad saw the dust on my sleeves at supper and didn't ask. Below us the rain kept falling on the keep, and the two crosses faced the same way.
