Small cross on upper back in black and grey

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman is photographed from behind, facing away from the camera, with her hair loosely piled up and an off-shoulder top. A small, solid black cross sits centred on her upper back between the shoulder blades. The image is black and white, with soft lighting and a plain dark background that keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Hest Mallory had the grafting knife in his coat pocket and the August light was going thin over the Pennick orchard. He walked the row of young rootstocks with a pot of wax warming on his hip, stopping at each trunk to find the smooth green place where a scion could sit. Ruth had told him not to hurry. She said the old trees knew when they were being rushed.

At the end of the row he found the stock he had been avoiding since spring, the one the March gale had split. Its top was gone, a clean wound grown over with pale callus. He drew the blade down the bark, then stopped, because the mark was already in his head: a short cut down and another across, the way his father had marked every tree he meant to save. He pressed the knife in and the bark opened without complaint.

Ruth came out with two cups of tea and stood at the gap in the hedge, watching him bind the scion with raffia while the wasps worked the windfalls. "That one won't take," she said. "Too much sap." He said he knew. He wrapped it anyway, tight and neat, and the wax went on warm and smelling of pine.

They walked back past the dark rows as the first lamps came on in the farmhouse. Behind them the little tree stood with its cross cut open to the evening air, and he did not look back at it. In the morning he would know whether the wax had cracked, and he already suspected it had not.
