Small cursive script on an inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A short line of thin, cursive script in black ink sits on the inner wrist of a clenched hand with pale painted nails. The linework is fine and even, with the letters sitting close together along the wrist. The skin tone is warm and the background is a soft teal surface, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

Dear Oriel, the boat came in on Tuesday without Father, and Mrs Penhallow says the tide took his cap first, which I think is a lie made kind. I have been sleeping in the loft with the gull feather you sent, counting the lamps out past the breakwater the way you taught me. One, two, and then the long wait before the third.

The word I chalked on the slate for the ferryman was imi ba. In the old island speech it means the place where the sea gives back what it kept, and you always said it was too much to ask of one small word. He laughed, took the slate, and said he would carry it across to the mainland if I paid him in mackerel. I paid him. He has not come back with an answer, but the gulls are wheeling over Carrick Rock this morning in the way they only do when there is something on the rocks worth shouting about, and I know he got there.
So here is what I have decided. I will not write to the mainland again. At the bottom of the ebb, when the causeway shows its green backbone, I will walk out to the rock myself and bring back whatever is left of his lamp, or his cap, or the fool of a dog who always followed him. You will think me reckless. You are allowed to think it, as long as you keep the kettle warm.
If the third light comes on before I am home, do not wait up for either of us. Leave the back door on the latch and the slate face down on the table, so the word can rest. Your sister, Wren.
