Sit closer, the lot of you, the canvas has more holes than I have teeth. I'll tell you about the Pellegrini brothers and their Endless Ribbon, because the old man who taught it to me swore it was the only honest thing the show ever did. Three brothers, one length of red silk, looped through a wooden hoop. The trick was to run that loop from the ring to the far pole without letting go, then back again, until the crowd forgot to count the passes.

The year the big top was sold for scrap to a Scarborough builder, Tomas, the youngest brother, noticed a girl in the front row who came every night for a fortnight. She wore a man's grey overcoat and never once clapped. She only watched the silk go round. On the final night a ticket boy carried a note down from her, folded small: 'Can you make it stop?' Tomas wrote his answer on the back of the playbill and sent it back up with the same boy.

The answer was a single line. 'I can't make it stop. I can only make it go on, and go round, and come back to the place you started.' Then the lamps went out one by one, the band packed up, and the brothers rolled their silk into a barrel.

Next morning the girl was gone, but the playbill was pinned to the ring post. Someone had drawn the ribbon in pencil, doubled over into a lazy eight, and beside it, in careful capitals, the one word the boy swore she had spelled out to him: LOVE. Tomas kept that page for forty years. He said it was the only receipt the circus ever gave him.
