Infinity symbol with 'sisters' on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink infinity symbol with the word sisters written in flowing script across its centre, tattooed on the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is shown in sharp focus against a light skin tone. The hand is angled toward the camera with the palm partly visible, and the tattoo sits near the centre of the frame.

The border would not close. For three days I had set black tesserae into the floor of the bath-house at Eboracum, tracing a figure of eight that rolled back into itself without a seam, and each evening the two ends fell a finger's width apart. Lucius, who paid for the floor and had opinions about everything, wanted it finished before the governor's wife came to bathe.

The sisters came on the fourth morning. They were seamstresses from the street behind the forum, one with dye stains on her fingers and the other with a mouth full of pins, and they stood at the edge of the mosaic as if it were a river they meant to cross. They had no interest in the floor. They wanted their word set into it, so that whoever bathed there would know two women had made their way through the city together.

I told them the loop was too old a shape to hold a single name. A figure of eight has no beginning, so any word set into its middle must be read by both halves at once. The elder sister frowned and asked me to write it anyway. I used a running hand, the letters joined like thread through a needle, and I set the word sisters straight across the crossing point where the two loops met.

At dusk I laid the last tessera and sat back on my heels. The black line ran unbroken around the figure, the word lay in its centre, and the ends met beneath it without a join. Lucius said the seam was invisible. The sisters said nothing, but the younger one touched the floor with two fingers, the way you touch a door you have just shut behind you.
