Small dot tattoos on fingers
Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are photographed palm down on a light fabric, with several rings on the fingers. Small, evenly spaced black dots sit along the finger joints and fingertips of both hands. The ink is crisp and solid with no shading, and the plain background keeps the focus on the hands.

That's the old way, from before my grandfather's time, and the men on the fell tops used their knuckles for it, one notch for every ewe through the gate. My mother's brother Ralph kept his tally on his own hand, a dot for each ten, pricked in with a needle and soot so he never lost his place when the mist came down thick off Cross Fell.

The winter the beck froze solid, he counted three hundred and eleven out of the top pasture and found his hand short by one dot. He searched the length of the wall in the blue dusk while the dog sat by the gate and would not come in. Ralph went back up alone with a lantern, and under the hawthorn he found the lost ewe wedged in a drift. When he came down he had her across his shoulders, and his free hand was still moving, finger to finger, murmuring the count so it would come right when he set her in the pen.
He always said the dots were never really for the sheep. They were so a man could look at his own fingers in the lamplight and know he had not gone to sleep on the wall. Put the kettle on, the light's nearly gone, and tell me your number.
