Arrow and lotus tattoos on fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand makes an OK-style gesture against a cream wall, with a small arrow pointing upward on the middle finger and a lotus flower on the ring finger. Both tattoos use thin black linework, with the lotus outlined and lightly detailed and the arrow a simple single-line shape. The hand is in sharp focus, with turquoise rings and a turquoise bracelet visible at the wrist, and the warm tones make the black ink stand out.

The big top is down to its last three poles by the time the canvas men fold it, and Mr Ostrowski has finally stopped pretending the Marigold Brothers will open in Ipswich. You sit on the step of the painted wagon with the ledger on your knee, adding up bookings in your own handwriting because nobody else left can add. The lotus on the wagon door has lost a petal to the damp. You have decided not to fix it.

The archery act was the last thing that paid. Uncle Teodor stood at the far end of the ring with his bow while you held a lemon above your head, and every night the crowd gasped when the arrow split it clean and the two halves dropped into your palms without a seed falling. He said the trick was not in the bow. It was in trusting that the thing you love will stay still long enough to be missed on purpose.

He left in October, on the milk train, with the bow wrapped in a blanket and no forwarding address. Before he went he tapped one arrow into the wagon's doorframe, shaft up, and told you it was so you would always know which way was the top. You thought he was being sentimental. You thought a great many things that winter.

This morning the frost lifted off the field in one long sheet, and the arrow was still there, pointing at a sky with no wire in it and no crowd beneath. You pulled it free, wiped the rust on your sleeve, and wrote in the ledger: Ipswich, cancelled. Lemons, two dozen, for the next town, whichever that turns out to be.
