Small lotus tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small lotus flower outline with a curled stem sits on the side of a finger between two knuckles. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink appears dark blue-black. The hand rests on a dark leather surface, with a silver band ring, a heart-shaped ring, bracelets and dark nail polish visible in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pond at Harrow Lane was dug by a man who hated water, or so your grandmother said, and it never drained properly and never quite froze. You were eleven the summer she sent you down there with a bucket and rubber gloves to fish out the blanket weed, because the lotus had sulked for two seasons and your uncle had given up on it. Nobody else would wade into that silt. You did it anyway, sleeves rolled, the boards warm under your knees, the water smelling of pennies and cut grass.

By the third afternoon you had stopped looking for the flower and started looking at the stem. It came up out of the black mud in a thin green line, and at the top, instead of a leaf, it bent over in a tight curl like a question mark someone had started and then thought better of. Beneath the curl sat a bud still closed tight, its outer petals edged in sharp points. You knelt on the boards and held your breath, the way your grandmother did when she threaded a needle, and waited for it to decide.

It opened the next morning while you were eating toast at the kitchen table, and when you ran down in your socks the whole pond seemed to have been waiting for it. White petals lifted clear of the water, dry and clean, not a speck of silt on them. You pressed one between the pages of a library book and forgot about it for years. Last week you found it again, brittle as tissue, and you were surprised how little it had faded, and how the curl of its stem still looked as if someone had only just finished drawing it.
